What is vitality? The dictionary defines it as:
1. exuberant physical strength or mental vigor: a person of great vitality.
2. capacity for survival or for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence: the vitality of an institution.
3. power to live or grow: the vitality of a language.
4. vital force or principle.
You know it. It’s the anticipation of a major event in your life; the exultation that comes from the accomplishment of a long-term goal; the breathless anticipation when you fall in love; the great joy you experience when you look into the infant face of a new family member; the contentment that comes from a long-term satisfying friendship; the moment of well being and happiness you feel when you view a beautiful sunrise and you’re looking forward to the day ahead.
When was the last time you experienced any of those feelings? It’s hard to feel excitement or joy when your body aches; when you’ve tried to lose weight for years and just can’t; when another relationship ends in disappointment; when the company you’ve been serving for years decides they don’t need you anymore; when the doctor has given a dreaded diagnosis to you or a close family member; when your beloved pet gets ill or injured and dies. The aches, pains and disappointments that come our way daily cause us to lose our enthusiasm and enjoyment for life.
