Calorie reduction
Many studies (dating as far back as 1935) done on animals - including dogs and primates - show that controlling their diets by reducing daily calorie allotment 20 to 40% leads to increased longevity by as much as 50%. In many of the test subjects, their life span was extended beyond the maximum life span of the species. The animals look and act younger than animals in the control group and have lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose. Also the joints and organs function better.
There have been short-term studies on humans. ALL those on CR diets experienced significant reductions in their BMI (Body Mass Index), total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, plasma glucose. Also, all the subjects had elevated HDL levels (the good cholesterol). Unfortunately, the researchers also found that excessive calorie restriction could lead to malnutrition and to anemia, muscle wasting, weakness, dizziness, lethargy, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gallstones, irritability and depression. I personally enjoy eating and would find this diet very depressing. However, most that have tried it report enhanced well being, energy levels, significant weight loss, and enhanced vitality.
Obviously, you should never try a diet such as this without checking with your doctor. But if nothing else has worked, this might be worth checking out. The most important element of this diet is that you become more aware of your nutritional requirements and get the most out of every bite you do take. No junk food on this diet - that’s the quick path to illness. Oh - and you still need to exercise!
So what to do? I’ve put some links to articles below to help you check it out for yourself. But you’re primarily going to be consuming fruits and vegetables, whole grains, oats, barley, lean sources of protein, nuts, and good oils. Just fewer of them than the rest of us. Let’s say your normal consumption is 2000 calories a day. If you cut 20%, you would drop your daily consumption to 1600 calories a day FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. And the 40% cut would be 1200 calories a day forever! I like the idea of intermittent fasting better. At least then I can eat all I want every other day.
